Donegal Castle / Caisleán Dhún na nGall

Donegal Castle is situated in Donegal Town. The Castle was built in 1505 by the O'Donnell family who were the ruling Gaelic family in Donegal for over a thousand years until they left Ireland with the Flight of the Earls in 1607.
The rectangular tower was then occupied by Sir Basil Brooke who transformed it by adding gables and windows and making the first floor into a banqueting hall complete with a Jacobean fireplace bearing his coat of arms. Beside the Tower Sir Basil built a southern facing manor house and reinforced the bawn-wall surrounding the Castle. The Castle has recently been renovated and is open daily from mid-June to October between the hours of 9.30am and 6.30pm..

Caisleán Dhún na nGall suite i mBaile Dhún na nGall. Bhí Clann Uí Dhomhnaill í gceannas ar Chondae Dhún na nGall ar feadh níos mó na míle bliain, ach b'éigean díofa Éireann a fhágáil le linn Teitheadh na n-Iarlaí i 1607. Ag an am sin bhí an tUasal Basil Brooke ina chonaí sa túr dronuilleoige ach rinne sé athchoiriú air agus chuir sé isteach binn agus fuinneogaí. D'eagraigh sé halla féasta ar an chéad úrlar, áit ar chuir sé áit tine Seacaibíteach a bhí dearaithe lena armas fhéin. In aice leis an Túir, thóg an tUasal Brooke mainéar a bhfuil a aghaidh ó dheas agus neartaigh sé an balla atá thart ar an Chaisleán. Rinneadh athchoiriú ar an Chaisleán le gairid agus tá sé foscailte gach lá ó lár Mheitheamh go Deireadh Fómhair idir 9.30 ar maidin agus 6.30 sa tráthnóna. ©
