Samuel Beckett and the Donegal connection!
Donegal actors Rosaleen Linehan and Sean McGinley, are among those performing in the newly released Beckett on Film project. The idea of filming all 19 of Beckett's stage plays originated with Michael Colgan (a Donegal descendant) of Blue Angel Films and the Gate Theatre, Dublin. He and and Alan Moloney of Parallel Films are the producers. Blue Angel are in partnership with Tyrone Productions of which Donegal woman Moya Doherty (the producer of Riverdance) is a director!
Beckett On Film has brought together some of the most distinguished directors and actors in film, television and theatre including Atom Egoyan, Neil Jordan, Conor McPherson, Anthony Minghella, David Mamet, Karel Reisz, Patricia Rozema and actors Michael Gambon, John Gielgud, Alan Rickman, John Hurt, Harold Pinter and Julianne Moore. Beckett's play 'What Where' is directed by Dublin born Damien O'Donnell, (also a descendant of Donegal) whose film East Is East is currently on international release and gaining massive critical acclaim as well as being awarded a BAFTA.

Water Pollution: EU Commission moves against Ireland
The European Commission has decided to proceed to the European Court of Justice against Ireland for non-respect of the European Union's 1976 Dangerous Substances Directive and has also decided to notify a Reasoned Opinion (second warning letter) to Ireland for non-respect of the 1991 Nitrates Directive. The decision on the 1976 Directive relates to general failures concerning required pollution reduction programmes for dangerous substances, as well as specific weaknesses in Irish measures for phosphorous, the substance which gives greatest concern for Irish water quality. The decision on the 1991 Directive relates to Ireland's failure to designate vulnerable zones for waters polluted by nitrates from agriculture and to adopt corresponding preventive and clean-up measures. There is similar action under way against other Member States. Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström commented: "I am concerned that Ireland is the only Member State not to have yet notified any nitrate vulnerable zones, and would urge the Irish authorities to take the necessary steps as soon as possible, including action for nitrate-polluted groundwaters on which small rural communities depend for their drinking water. As regards the 1976 Dangerous Substances Directive, I would also urge the Irish authorities to do more. For the most important substance, phosphorous, Irish measures are moving in the right direction, but need to go further. ". Donegal County Council take note!

Victory for Braade/ Carrickfin Conversation Group
Local TDs have confirmed that the Swedish Company, Avipaint have abandoned their plans for industrial development at Carrickfin because of massive local opposition and the High Court proceedings by local residents which are still ongoing. The decision by Avipaint was intimated to Minister O'Rourke by a representative of Údaras na Gaeltachta at a recent meeting in Dublin attended by representatives of the Airport Company, Údaras, the Government and local TDs Dinnie McGinley and Thomas Gildea.
The local Conservation Group had been campaigning against the proposed development for over 2 years as they viewed the Swedish Company's proposals as a threat to the environment in a very scenic area adjoining a Blue Flag Beach. Despite the support of Donegal County Council, Údaras, the Airport Company and Government Ministers for the paint stripping plant, the power of the local community and their belief in the justness of their campaign appears to have been decisive. Meanwhile, three local residents are continuing to strenuously defend Defamation proceedings raised against them by the Swedish company and its Managing Director arising from comments made during the course of the Conservation Group's campaign.
Against this background of two long running High Court actions arising from the expansion plans at Donegal Airport, the West Donegal Land League Limited, a company formed by local land owners, including members of the Conservation Group, is about to issue High Court proceedings against Údaras na Gaeltachta and others regarding land ownership and other rights pertaining to the land in and around the Airport at Carrickfin. Proceedings have been drafted by Counsel and will be issued shortly.
On the political front, the Braade/Carrickfin Conservation Group are calling on all conservation and environmental groups in Donegal to liaise with each other and put forward candidates in the forthcoming general election. It is expected that environmental groups in Donegal will embrace this suggestion in view of the isolation which they have experienced due to the failure of local representatives generally to support them on environmental issues in the face of a pro-developer mentality by Donegal County Council, Údaras, Government Departments and An Bord Pleanala. The Alternatives to Pylons Group
The Alternatives to Pylons Group challenge Donegal County Council to rescind their decision to allow the ESB planning permission for 100 kilometres of 110kv poles and pylons across West Donegal based on new research which indicates that living near pylons does increase the risk of getting cancer.
Richard Leake, science editor of The Sunday Times this week reported (4/3/01) that:
"High voltage power cables have been officially linked to cancer for the first time. Sir Richard Doll, the epidemiologist who discovered the link between smoking and lung cancer in the 1960s, will this week warn that children living near electricity power lines are at an increased risk from leukaemia. He is also expected to say that there may be a link with adult cancers but that this is unproven as yet". Doll's work was commissioned by the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), the UK government's radiation watchdog.
This new study supports Professor Denis Henshaw's research (See Electric Fields) that power lines increase the risk of cancer especially in children. In light of this most recent research the ATP and Coiste Timpeallachta Ghaoth Dobhair are appealing to Donegal County Council to CHANGE THEIR MINDS AND SAVE LIVES.
If this development goes ahead it is possible that those responsible for agreeing to the development may be held accountable for future childhood cancers in the County.
In a second Sunday Times article (4/3/01) it is reported that UK families living close to power lines are now considering suing over the premature deaths of their family members due to cancer. An Bord Pleanala are currently making a decision which is literally a life and death issue for the people of Donegal.
But it is not too late for the County Council to reclaim their authority and rescind their decision just as Cobh Council did in Cork.

Truailliú Uisce: An Coimisiún Eorpach in éadan Éireann
Tá an Coimisiún Eorpach ag tabhairt an tír seo go dtí an European Court of Justice. Tá siad ag deanamh amach nar thug Éireann aird ar Threoracha an t-Aontas Eorpach, 1976 Substaint Contúirteach agus tá sé leagtha amach acu an scéal a inse do Bharúil Réasúnach ( an dara litir fógartha) d'Éirinn mar nar thug siad aird ar na Treoracha Níotráitím 1991.
Baineann na Treoracha 1976 le faillí ginearalta nuair nach cuireadh cláracha laghdú truailliú ar siúil do shubstaint contúirteach, chomh maith le laigeachtaí sa tomhas Éireannach do Fhosfarúil, an substaint a chuireann scóth an uisce anseo in Éirinn I gcontúirt an-mhór. Baineann na Treoracha 1991 le faillí ginearalta nuair nach chuir Éirinn criosanna airithe le éascanna iontú ar fáil d'uisce truaillithe le Níotráitím ó thalmhaíocht. Chomh maith le seo baineann na treoracha le doigheanna le iarrachtaí coisctheach a chuir in áit agus doigheanna le glanadh suas a thogáil amach.
Tá obair ar siúl faoi láthair leis an gníomhú céanna a dheanamh le baill stáit eile san Eoraip. Duirt an Coimisinéir Timpeallachta Margot Wallstrom le gairid:
"Tá imní orm gurbh é Éireann an t-aon bhaill san Eoraip nach chuir in iúil ar chriosanna Níotráitím airithe, agus molaim d'údarais na hÉireann na ceimeanna cearta a ghlacadh go luath agus is feidir, chomh maith le gníomhú ar thalamh uisce atá truaillithe le níotráitím mar go bhfuil an pobal iarghúlta ag brath air an uisce. Mar gheall ar na Treoracha Substaint Contiúrtach 1976, mholainn d' údarais na hÉireann níos mó a dheanamh. Le haghaidh an substaint is tabhachtaigh, Fhosfarúil, tá rudaí ag dul an bealach ceart anseo ach caithfear níos mó a dheanamh." Comhairle Condae Dhún na nGall - glac nóta!

Bhí tuairisc ag Richard Leake, eagarthóir eolaíochta leis an pháipear nuachtan The Sunday Times, an tseachtain seo caite ( 04/03/01) agus dúirt sé:
"Don chéad uair tá ceangal oifigiúil idir cáblaí cumhachta le ardvoltas agus ailse . Rinne Richard Doll, Epidemiologist an ceangal idir caitheamh toitíní agus ailse scámhain sna seascoidí agus an tseachtain seo tabhairfaidh sé le fios do dhaoine ar an chontúirt do phaistí a bhfuil ina gconaí congarach ag línte cumhachta leictreachas agus ar an doigh a bhfuil ardú millteanach I Leukemia.
