Historic Victory for The Alternative to Pylons (ATP) Group, Donegal
In May, 2000 Donegal County Council granted planning permission to the Electricity Supply Board to erect 100 kilometres of 110KV poles and pylons through West Donegal. The Alternative to Pylons (ATP) Group, Coiste Timpeallachta Ghaoth Dobhair and An Taisc made separate submissions to An Bord Pleanála to hold an Oral Hearing to voice their objections and these were held in December, 2000.
On July 2nd, 2001 the Board firmly rejected the ESB's proposals on grounds perusant to the Local Government (Planning and Development) Acts, 1963 to 1999. See ATP for details.
The ATP would like to extend a heartfelt thanks all its supporters around the world. The ESB have yet to comment or make known their plans to improve the electricity infrastructure in Donegal.

Thirty Jobs for Kilcar
Údaras na Gaeltachta have announced 30 new jobs in Kilcar with the opening of a synthetic slate factory next October. The company, currently based in Yorkshire, manufactures slates from recycled polymer and polystyrene.

Buncrana Environmental Group
Porthaw Glen is a large natural amenity of 60 or more acres on the edge of Buncrana. Most of the area is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) yet housing developments are continuing there with several planning permissions now under appeal.
The BEG's petition to An Board Pleanála in relation to a Holiday Home development in Porthaw Glen, will give the Board an opportunity to save an ancient wood and protect its SAC status. An Taisce has appealed to An Bord Pleanála to hold an Oral Hearing and supporting observations are also being submitted by the residents of the access road. The decision as to whether to grant an oral hearing will be known soon.
There has been a deafening silence from Donegal's TDs on these developments. The developer has discussed the Porthaw Glen development with Bord Failte, the IDA, Donegal County Council and directly with the government. 'These discussions must be made public and the same bodies held accountable for the consequences of the development', said a spokesperson for the Buncrana Environmental Group.

Donegal Duo in West Tyrone Election
Donegal natives, Pat Doherty of Sinn Féin and Brid Rogers of the S.D.L.P, battled it out in the recent Westminster General Election with Pat Doherty being elected MP for West Tyrone. Pat will commute between his Tyrone constituency and his home in West Donegal.

Aquaculture in Lough Swilly
Buncrana Environmental Group is protesting the fact that the Government and their agencies have chosen to ignore Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) in relation to the expansion of Aquaculture on Lough Swilly.
Two recently granted salmon-farming licences are located at Callagh and Binnawheelmoore which is within a SAC while Callagh, off the Urris Hills, borders an area listed in the Donegal Development Plan 2000 as a Category 3 Area, (an "area of highest quality landscape in the county, with characteristics of wilderness, and few if any man made structures").
A European Commission official has recently described Ireland's approach to aquaculture developments in Special Protection Areas (SPAs) as "quite disturbing" and "very serious". The comments came in the wake of the EC Directorate-General Environments formal warning to the Irish government over aquaculture sites in the Lough Swilly area.
B.E.G. believes that the increase in Aquaculture, housing development and industry on both sides of Lough Swilly poses a threat to the waters and the wildlife of the area. According to BEG a 1,000 tonne salmon farm produces the sewage waste equivalent to a town of 20,000 people. On this basis the fish farms in Lough Swilly are producing waste equivalent to a town of 30,000 people, more than all the major towns in Donegal put together.

Ballyshannon By-Pass C.R.A.S.H
An Oral Hearing into the siting of the proposed Ballyshannon by-pass has opened in the town. C.R.A.S.H - Concerned Residents Against Super Highways - is objecting to the fact that the proposed route cuts straight through a housing estate. They are vowing to take their case to the European Court of Human Rights if the appeal goes against them.

The Eagles have Landed
Twelve Golden Eagle chicks have taken up residence in Glenveigh National Park. The birds, which were brought from Scotland, are the first of a total of 75 birds which will be introduced over the next five years in an effort to reintroduce the bird to Donegal.
The Golden Eagle became extinct in Ireland due to over zealous egg collectors in the first decades of the last century and no Golden Eagle has been spotted in Ireland since 1912. This project aims to have a dozen breeding pairs at Glenveigh within a decade.

Diving for Gold in Lough Swilly
The SS Laurentic, a White Star Liner, was built by Harland & Wolf in 1908 and commandered by the British Navy during World War 1. The ship was sunk by a German mine 4 miles south east of Fanad lighthouse in 1917 with the loss of 354 lives. The Laurentic was transporting forthy-three tonnes of gold bullion, a large amount of which was recovered by the British Navy during the 1920's and 30's. However twenty gold bars and two hundred tonnes of silver remain at the bottom of the Swilly under 42 metres of water.
This summer the City of Derry Sub-Aqua Club believe they will recover one of the ship's three safes after 19 years diving on the wreck which still contains live ammunition. The Laurentic belongs to Roger Cossum who bought it from the British Treasury over thirty years ago.

Section 4 use highest in Donegal
Outgoing Chair of Donegal County Council, Sean Maloney, has criticised the fact that Donegal has the highest number of planning refusals revoked than any other county in Ireland. This means that having had planning permission refused the person lobbies their local councillor to have the decision reversed at council level and councillors are supporting each other when it comes to a vote, allowing rampant development in scenic areas.

The poems, entitled, 'Ungrateful Singer' and an untitled poem have since been published in the Times Literary Supplement.
The Monaghan poet, Patrick Kavanagh, was a frequent visitor to Killygordon where his married sister lived, during the 1940's and 50's.

Det. Sgt. on Bail
The Detective Sergeant charged with 'unlawful possession of a firearm' was remanded on bail to appear in Court on October 4th next. Det. Sgt John White is disputing the method in which he was arrested in Letterkenny in June. He is the first police officer arrested in Donegal following the much publicised Assistant Commissioner Carty's investigation into police misconduct in the County.

85 Jobs Lost in Ballybofey
The flax to linen thread production mill, Herdmans, will close in Ballybofey during August with the loss of 85 jobs and its sister factory in Sion Mills, Tyrone faces the same number of job losses. Herdmans has been manufacturing in the Finn Valley for over fifty years and its closure is blamed on cheaper manufacturing costs in the Far East.

A Muff man have given a new meaning to 'Taking the Law into your own hands' when he decided to paint the Garda Station next door to his house because he was disgusted by the state of the exterior. Has the Government hit on a new cost-cutting measure?
