Niall's leadership helped deliver Donegal's second New York title in a row in 2001. Anton Diver, from Gweedore, has been named Junior Player of the Year. The ladies team made great strides in 2001 and Teresa Cassels has been chosen to receive the Ladies Distinguished Service Award while the Ladies Player of the Year award goes to Tina Dengler. The New York GAA Junior Football final was played at Gaelic Park on 19th May with Donegal winning 2-15 to Fermanagh's 2-9. In a league in which importing players is the general rule, the Donegal Junior team made an exception, fielding 12 Donegal born players, all now resident in New York, and adding two more from their substitute panel during the match. Summer Festival Diary Dates The 5th McGlinchey Summer School, with the theme of 'Borders, Boundaries and Divisions', will be held this year on the weekend of the 5th - 7th July in Clonmany. Nobel Laureate Seamas Heaney will deliver the opening address, entitled 'Who owned that half a rood?' He will be joined by folk singer Tommy Sands in an evening of poetry and music. The Exhibition Centre will house art by local artists, photographs, farming equipment and other memorabilia from the 1940s. The 14th Earagail Arts Festival takes place from the 8th-21st of July. Golden Eagles on the Wing The six Golden Eagles released in Donegal last year are doing fine and can be seen soaring above Glenveigh, Aghla and Muckish. The birds are radio tagged and their progress can be tracked at the Golden Eagle website. Donegal and the Great War The County Donegal Book of Honour - The Great War 1914 - 1918 by former Fine Gael TD Paddy Harte has just been published in hardback. It lists the names of Donegal men and women who died in the First World War and also includes maps of the various battlefields. For information on the book's distribution and availability email . Donegal Local Development Co. Donegal Local Development Company are holding a series of public information evenings on the Leader Programme. Leader II by DLDC was one of the most successful LEADER Programmes delivered in Ireland. The aim of the information evenings is to outline the objectives of the programme to potential project promoters and stimulate ideas which might be fundable under this very important rural development programme. The overall aim of LEADER is to encourage rural project promoters, both community groups and private promoters to think about the long term-potential of their area. An outline of the LEADER + Programme Guidelines including eligible measures and funding rates will be presented each night. In east Donegal a meeting will take place in the Finn Valley Centre, Stranorlar on May 30th and the St. Johnston / Carrigans Resource Centre on June 4th. In south Donegal the meetings will take place in the Inver Community Centre, Inver on June 6th. Round Up the Usual Suspects The General Election threw up no surprises in Donegal. Former TD and MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher was returned for Fianna Fáil as was Cecilia Keaveney; Jim McDaid and Mary Coughlan while Dinny McGinley retained his seat for Fine Gael. The Blaney dynasty continues in Donegal North East with Niall Blaney, son of Harry and nephew of the late Neil, returned for Independent Fianna Fáil. Donegal Football Fever There's no escaping the World Cup saga - Shay Given from Lifford is on Ireland's World Cup squad and the young goalie is being coached in Japan by none other than Donegal's Packie Bonner who performed so well at Italia '90. The Cork Connection! Arranmore Island is celebrating the election of Dan Boyle as Green TD in Cork City. Chicago born Dan's father Joe was from the island and his mother was from Cork. The family returned to Cork in the early '70s and Dan is a regular visitor to Arranmore where he still has relatives. It's a pity the family didn't return to Donegal where the Green Party did not field any candidates in the General Election! 8 Year Mystery Solved? A Laois man has been charged at Enniskillen Court with the murder of the fifteen year old Castlederg teenager, Arlene Arkinson, who went missing after a night out at a Bundoran disco in August, 1994. Robert Howard was questioned at the time of Arlene's disappearance but released by the RUC. In May of this year he was charged at Maidstone Count, England with the murder of a London teenager, Hannah Williams, who went missing in April, 2001. Howard was susequently flown to Fermanagh to be charged with Arlene's murder and appeared in Enniskillen Court on May 24th. Arlene's body has never been found. Dancing at An Grianán The Forristal School of Dance, Gweedore will showcase their work at An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny on June 5th and the Dance Theatre of Ireland will perform their new programme at the Theatre on June 22nd. Bull Island The Donegal Branch of the Irish Farmers' Association have donated a bull named Island Roy to the farmers on Arranmore Island to augment the island's dwlindling cattle numbers. The bull was transported by boat to the island on May 29th and there are great expectations that the 35 cattle on the island will increase in numbers. New Album from Altan Donegal band Altan have released a new album called The Blue Idol which features tracks by Paul Brady and Dolly Parton. Altan have just returned from a 3 month US tour and are due in Japan for the 3rd Altan Festival in Tokyo in August. Richard Gilpin Concerts in Donegal Convoy based Richard Gilpin will play a number of venues in Donegal in June, including An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny on June 8th supporting 'The 4 of Us'; The Harbour Bar, Downings on June 22nd and McGilloways (The Oyster) Dunfanaghy on June 28th. For further information email the . More Job Losses in Gweedore 120 workers have lost their jobs following the closure of the Ruibear Motair Teoranta (R.M.T.) factory in Gweedore. More than 600 jobs have been lost in Gweedore in the past year while a further 200 jobs were lost in Falcarragh in the past two years. Donegal's unemployment figure is now 4 times the national figure. |
