Donegal Protestors at Shannon Airport Two of the anti-war protestors arrested at Shannon Airport have strong Donegal links. Both Rebecca Garcia and Mary Kelly were members of the 'Atlantis' community at Burtonport and Inishfree Island in the 1970's. Both were arrested while protesting about the US military aircraft refuelling at Shannon airport on their way to Iraq. Kelly damaged a US aircraft with a hammer to the tune of $500,000 while Garcia was charged with threatening a woman Garda. Both have been banned from entering County Clare for several years. The Donegal Anti-War Alliance is sending a bus to the National Demonstration at Shannon airport on April 12th. For further information email . Hottest March on Record Anyone visiting Donegal in March could have been forgiven for thinking that the County had moved to the Southern Hemisphere. There were over 3 weeks of continuous sunshine with NO RAIN - a definite record. St. Patrick's Day was bathed in glorious sunshine as were the weeks prior to and following the National Holiday. All the signs point to a good Summer ahead which is just as well as the weather last Summer was one of the worst on record. Water Pollution in Buncrana The national Environmental Protection Agency are investigating the source of pollution in a stream at the old Fruit of the Loom plant in Buncrana. The factory has been closed for four months so it is not known where the pollution is coming from but locals are worried as the pollution is running into the sea and is visible from the beach. Drumboe Martyrs Remembered March 14th saw the 80th anniversary of the execution of four Republicans by Free State forces at Drumboe Woods, Stranolar during the Irish Civil War in 1923. Comdt. General Charlie Daly, Lieut. Dan Enright, Lieut. Tim O'Sullivan (all from Co. Kerry) and Brig. Comdt. Sean Larkin (from Co. Derry) were interned in Drumboe Castle for five months prior to their execution by firing squad, a mere six weeks before the end of the Civil War. The Tirconaill Commemoration Committee marked the event and the end of the Civil War with a Dinner Dance in Ballybofey on April 4th when relatives of the men were presented with memorial sculptures. This event will be followed by an Easter Sunday Commemoration at Drumboe Woods on April 20th. Easter in Crolly A Festival of music and craic will take place over Easter Weekend (19th to 21st of April) in Crolly. Events are planned for all the family and children are especially catered for. The management has cited the turndown in world economics and rising insurance costs as the reason for the redundancies. No April Fools in Dunfanaghy What was assumed to be an April Fool's joke on Highland Radio turned out to anything but. Listeners to Donegal's most popular radio station on April 1st were stunned to hear that a local Dunfanaghy business man had painted one of his buildings on Dunfanaghy main street with the Cross of St. George and inscribed 'A Protestant Town for a Protestant people' on the building. Apparently he is protesting the fact that he was denied planning permission for a shore front development and he blaims objections from owners of holiday homes in the area who he claims are largely members of the Protestant faith from Belfast. This type of sectarianism is inconceivable in this day and age and the business man concerned should make his way to the Intolerance Seminar in Letterkenny on April 9th. ![]() Lá Gach Lá le Doiminic Ó Brolcháin Fuair mé cuireadh le déanaí cuairt a thabhairt ar oifigí Lá agus níos mó eolais a fháil amach faoin tionscnamh atá ar bun acu nuachtán laethúil Gaeilge a chur amach. Caithfidh mé a bheith ionraic, mo lámh a chur in airde agus a rá go bhfuil meas agam ar mhuintir Lá le fada fada an lá, níl imeartas focal i gceist ! Is mór an dul chun chinn atá déanta acu ó am ar cuireadh an nuachtán amach ar ghléas cóipeála. Cé go bhfuil cruth tablóideach air caithfear a admháil go bhfuil slacht sa chur i láthair air a théann i bhfeidhm ar an aos óg ach go háirithe agus is féidir le mo leithéidse a bheith beo leis fosta - tá cúig chéad cóip á ndíol in aghaidh na seachtaine do dhaoine óga ! Is fada aithne agus meas agam ar leithéidí Máirtín Uí Mhuilleoir, Áine Mhic Ghearailt, Eoghan Uí Néill agus Ghearóid Uí Chearúlláin. Is cuimhin liom sa bhliain 1982 seic £100 a bhronnadh orthu ar son Chonradh na Gaeilge le linn a gcamchuarta ar Éirinn le hairgead a bhailiú. Tháinig an tuar faoin tarraingreacht maidir leis an infheistiú beag sin ! Tá LÁ anois ceannaithe ag Nuachtáin, an chomhlacht a chuireann an Andersonstown News, North Belfast News, agus South Belfast News amach. Bhí mo sheanchairde Seán agus Séamas Mac Aindreasa ar na daoine a bhunaigh an Andersonstown News an chéad uair agus thacaigh siad go láidir le LÁ ariamh anall. Is é Máirtín Ó Muilleoir bainisteoir na Comhlachta, Nuachtáin, agus déantar bradús ar LÁ gan deontais san áireamh in aghaidh na bliana. San am i láthair tá seachtar fostaithe ag LÁ agus déanfar sin a mhéadú go dtí beirt dhéag nuair a thiocfas GACH LÁ ar an saol. Tá cruthaithe ag foireann i mBhéal Feirste gur féidir nuachtán den scoth a chur amach ar bhonn seachtainiúil agus bheadh dóchas nach beag agam gur féidir leis an dream gairmiúil seo nuachtán laethúil a chur amach go seachtainiúil a bheas spreagúil bríomhar slachtmhar. Agus ní féidir a shéanadh ach go bhfuil a leithéid de dhíth le fada fada an lá ! Is fiú cuairt a thabhairt ar oifigí LÁ, ar an chlólann leis na háiseanna gairmiúla atá acu a fheiceáil. Ritheann an smaoineamh chugat agus tú ar do bhealach amach gur dream iad atá dáiríre faoin a gcuid oibre agus gur féidir muinín a chur iontu go n-úsáidfí an teicneolaíocht is déanaí chun an timthriall táirge is éifeachtaí a chruthú le haghaidh na leathanach lánphictiúr, an-éifeachtach do nuachtán laethúil i nGaeilge. Dála an scéil, tá Conallach mná Áine Ní Ghallchóir, iníon le Noel Johnny Sheáin ar an fhoireann an nuachtáin anois. Is iontach an tuar dóchais don Ghaeilge go bhfuil comhlacht ráthúil ar nós Nuachtáin sásta an oiread sin muiníne a chur sa teanga. Níl le déanamh againne ach ár dtacaíocht a thabhairt dóibh. Mura bhfuil tú cláraithe cheana féin cuir glaoch ar Chonnla ar (048) 90605050 agus ceannaigh do shíntiús roimh thús na Bealtaine - ní bheidh lá aiféala ort ! Carrickfinn Beach in Danger The beach at Carrickfinn is in danger of loosing its Blue Flag status due to the continuous use of the beach for car and quad bike racing which is destroying the sands and dunes. While the protection of beach matter is covered by local by-laws it has not prevented joy riders from damaging the beach. ![]() |
