200 more job losses in Gweedore
Pearse Doherty, Sinn Féin representative for Donegal South West, said that there is huge anger and disappointment in the area at the announcement that Comerama yarns manufacturer has gone into receivership putting the future of 200 employees on the line.
The closure of comerama brings to 1,000 the number of job losses in the Gweedore Industrial Estate in the last three years.
Doherty said: 'There is huge anger that there has been such an inadequate response from the government. People don't want to hear that a commission has or is to be established to look into this matter. There have been enough reports. The last report targeted the creation of 200 new jobs in 2003 and a further 200 in 2004 in the Gweedore industrial estate. Since the publication of this report we have seen little in job creation but plenty of job losses with the closure of four factories.
What is now required is action, every effort must be made to ensure the future of the 200 employees of Comerama. Investment must be made into sustainable industry in the areas that need it most. Donegal is one such area and I am calling on the Tanaiste directly to target this area for investment and inward development.

Ardara Photographic Exhibition
'Faoi Scath a Cheile a Mhaireann na Daoine' - Ardara Portraits 2001-2003 by Richard Wayman and curated by John M. Cunningham is taking place at the Ardara Artists Resource Centre.
International photo-journalist Richard Wayman returns to Ardara with an exciting new exhibition documenting the lives of the local community - a project inspired by his many visits to the area over the years.
Entitled 'Faoi Scath a Cheile a Mhaireann na Daoine' which literally translates as 'people living in the shadow of each other' Wayman's pictures seek to capture 'the essence of interaction' of a community caught between the past and the future.
The exhibition is Wayman's second for the Earagail Arts Festival. Wayman's work has been extensively published in leading international magazines including Time, Newsweek and National Geographic. The exhibition runs until July 26th.

Aileach to launch CD
Aileach, formerly one of Donegal's most popular traditional music groups, has reformed after 20 years to launch a new CD.
Aileach played to rave reviews in the 1970s and the group, made up of Dinny McLaughlin, Bernard Heaney, Pat McCabe and Brian McRory are delighted to be performing together again.
The CD entitled 'Aileach' is made up of reels, jigs, slow airs and ballads which former fans will be familiar with.
According to Dinny McLaughlin the album is a compilation of the two records produced by the group in the 1970s which were extremely popular when they first came out.
The launch of the Aileach CD takes place in the Grianan of Aileach Centre at Burt on Friday, July 18th.
Lovers of traditional music should make sure not to miss this very special occasion which promises a night to remember.

Donegal to lose 25 Teaching Jobs
The Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland Union representative for Donegal has attacked plans to cut over 25 temporary teaching posts in the County.
Mr Kieran Christie forecasts that Donegal schools will have to restrict subjects, increase class sizes or put higher and ordinary level classes together if the proposals to shed over 300 such jobs nationally are implemented in September.

Donegal Woman in Record Swim
Anne Maire Ward will be the first woman to swin from Tory Island to the mainland on July 19th. The distance is some ten miles and Anne Maire will undertake the challenge for charities, including Donegal Hospice and The Friends of Letterkenny Hospital.

No Disabled Facilities in Castlefin School
A pupil at Safan's National School near Castlefin has to be brought home every time he needs to go to the toilet as there are no disabled facilities in the school.
Nine year old Stephen Bell suffers from Spina Bfida but in spite of the school applying for funding to adapt the toilets and add a changing table, the Department of Education has yet to act.
More than 570 disabled people in Donegal will have to go without essential facilities like downstairs toilets, stair lifts or showers this year because of Government cutbacks in the Disabled Person's Grants. It is a sad irony that during the Special Olympics and the European Year of the Disabled so many people in Ireland continue to live in intolerable conditions and without access to the most basic facilities.

Drought in Inishowen?
Half of Inishown's water supply is being wasted according to Donegal County Council. The Council has called on residents of the Peninsula to conserve water as Malin residents have been without water for cooking, washing and cleaning.
The main source of the public supply serving these areas is from groundwater at Tir Na League in Carndonagh where the levels are said to have dropped.
Meanwhile the ongoing problems with the water in Fintown in central Donegal seem no closer to being resolved. Almost two years after a new filtration system has been installed it is still not operational and the water continues to be cloudy and is foul-tasting, so much so that those residents who rely on the water supply (many have their own well) have to buy bottled water for drinking and cooking.
Is a clean, regular water supply too much to ask in a Country with the highest year round rainfall in Europe?
