EU Regional Funding set to Diminish
There will be no transitional funding for the Border, Midlands and Western (BMW) region after 2006 unless Member States allocate larger budgets in the next two years. Following the accession of ten new States on May 1st an extra €5bn to €12bn will be allocated for regional funding with the Irish taxpayer accounting for over €50m a year. After 2006 the BMW region will lose its designation as a poor region because the overall average EU income will be lowered in accord with the economies of the new States joining the Union.

Government Broadband Strategy Criticised
Buncrana Councillor Jim Sheridan has criticised government policy on the provision of broadband in Inishowen because of the costs involved for the consumer. The current strategy has put the cost of providing the broadband infrastructure onto the consumer and beyond the reach of many businesses and private households. A major rethink has to occur if Broadband is to be provided at reasonable costs and the Government should be looking at cost-cutting alternatives, like wireless and satellite systems, rather than laying fibre optic cable as it plans at present.

Council Backs Call for Irish in the EU
Donegal County Council has voted to call on the Government to make Irish an official language of the European Union. Irish was not designated an official language of the Union on our entry in 1973 but, as Ireland now hosts the Presidency of the Union, the Government could decree Irish an official language of the Union, giving acknowledgement to the first language of the State and creating employment for Irish speakers in Europe. Under current proposals potential employees must speak two 'official' European Union languages to gain employment in EU bodies but, as it is, Irish is not recognised.
