Irish Language Requirement for Gardai
Donegal Councillor Pearse Doherty has voiced his concern at reports that the Justice Minister Michael McDowell is to drop the Irish language requirement for membership of the Garda Siochána. He described the proposal as an insult to Irish language speakers and called for it to be rescinded immediately.
'Article 8 (1) of the Constitution states that the Irish language as the national language is the first official language. The Department of Justice has consistently acted in deliberate breach of this provision and if they go ahead with this hare brained proposal the result is that members of the Garda will be unable to work effectively in many communities across this state', said Doherty.

Counselling Course for Women
Letterkenny Women's Centre are planning to run an eight week course, 'Introducing Women to Counselling and Listening' in the Gweedore area. The aim of the course is to raise awareness about counselling. It will be a gentle, non-academic course. It will provide an introduction and exploration of aspects of counselling e.g. the qualities of a counsellor, counselling skills, the provision of counselling services and issues that are brought to counselling.
Learning will be through group interaction and while the course is not counselling training, there will be time to find out about and try our basic listening skills. The facilitator will encourage a fun, relaxed environment. The course is not so much about wanting to be a counsellor. It is an introduction to these issues for you as a parent of partner or member of your community. Kate Hoods will facilitate the course. Kate is an experienced group facilitator. She is an accredited counsellor and psychotherapist and works in Letterkenny Well Women's Centre. If you are interested in this course please contact Letterkenny Women's Centre on 91-24985.

Public Outrage at Minabpoll Landfill Proposal
Following three well attended meetings in Gartan, Fintown and in Glenswilly there is overwhelming local objection to the Council's proposed Landfill at Minabpoll which is situated adjacent to scenic Meeniroy Hill and only 11 kms from Glenveigh National Park. Locals fear environmental pollution; the loss of tourism revenue and devaluation of their land and homes. The fact that the site is 900 ft above the Gartan main water supply and that a tribituary of the River Finn runs through the site makes the very suggestion ludicruous.
At a meeting in Fintown, one member of the public compared the proposition to a Monty Python sketch. 'It's like an Irish joke. Why would you choose a place with 2000-3000 mm of rainfall per annum, at 1000ft above sea level to situate a dump - never mind the wind capacity? It's ridiculous.'
The proposed landfill dump at Minabpoll would be capable of taking up to 80,000 tonnes of rubbish per year, according to Donegal County Council's own Environmental Impact Study (EIS) which cites a daily average of 29 vehicles travelling in each direction from the site, or worst case scenario, 27 vehicles per hour. The logicistics are frightening. These statistic coupled with the light pollution of orange flourescent lights 24/7; the gas flare buring off methane and carbon monoxide gases; the disruption to the bird and wildlife whose numbers are exceptionally high; the hazards of vermin; insecticide and the pollution to local sheep and turf farms, makes this the most ridiculous proposition ever to eminate from Donegal County Council. The County has not published their intention to site a landfill at Minabpoll so they are in breach of the law.
Members of the public are urged to put their objections in writing to An Bord Pleanála (64, Marlborough St, Dublin 1) before the November 8th deadline.
Trevor Sargent T.D. of the Green Party will visit the proposed site at Minabpoll on Friday the 29th of October at 2.30pm. There will be a 'NO DUMP!' public meeting in Foxhall Parish Hall, Glenswilly on Monday November 8th. Further information from .

Eamon O'Kane at Cavanacor
Eamon O'Kane is having a solo exhibition in Cavanacor Gallery until the 20th of October. O'Kane has established an indisputable reputation over the past decade. This exhibition of painting is entitled 'The Studio,' and it follows his last show 'America' at the gallery held five years previously. In the interim he has had a remarkable twenty-five solo exhibitions nationally and internationally in Louisville, New York, Hanover, Zurich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Holland, Copenhagen, Dublin, Limerick, Kilkenny, Cork, and Belfast.
'The Studio' is a long anticipated follow up and it features a superb selection of the artist's recent practice. References are made to the world's leading architects; Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Alto, Le Corbousier, Lacation Vassal and Elam and Bray. The result is a magnificent flight of artistic fancy, where O'Kane imagines these ideal architectural spaces for other artists and himself as studios. These buildings are located in remote locations removed from civilisation and often surrounded by trees. They are essentially ideal spaces and yet O'Kane has also constructed a series based on Kubrick's landmark film, 'The Shining,' where the artist's retreat overwhelmed the protagonist claiming his sanity.
PArt of the exhibition is comprised of a series based on the Overlook Hotel and 'The Shining', small paintings offering vignette impressions of the exterior and interior. This is a pivotal exhibition for O'Kane marking his second homecoming and reaffirming his unwavering commitment to art. Mike Fitzpatrick has insisted 'For Eamon, to work is to live; this strategy in turn develops and forms his language and philosophy.'
The exhibition continues until the 20 October. For further information contact Marianne O'Kane, Curator, Cavanacor Gallery, Ballindrait, Lifford, Co. Donegal.
