11 Blue Flags for Donegal Beaches Donegal has maintained 11 Blue Flags, with only Kerry and Mayo earning more. Narin beach at Port Noo had its Blue Flag restored after losing it last year. The other Donegal beaches that maintained their status were: Murvagh, Rossnowlagh, Fintra, Narin-Portnoo, Carrickfinn, Marble Hill, Lisfannon, Portsalon, Culdaff and Shroove. The criteria in question cover environmental management, washing and toilet facilities and provision of visitor information. Haggerty Family Reunion The Haggerty Family Reunion will take place from Auust 18th to 20th, 2006 at the Illahee State Park, Bremerton, Washington. A 100 person shelter has been reserved for all day Saturday & Sunday with a major potluck picnic planned for Saturday afternoon. McGonigal DNA Project Frank McGonigal's (Ontario, Canada) gr.gr.grandparents Hugh McGonigal and Sarah Coyle were born in Ireland around 1814, according to the 1851 census in Glasgow, Scotland. Frank is sure that his ancestors were born in Inishowen and is looking for male McGonigals willing to partake in a Y DNA test. Wanderings across the Pond Joseph Ferry of Philadelpia is making his third attempt to cross the Atlantic to Falcarragh to fulfil a life's dream to sail the Atlantic single-handedly. Joseph Ferry teaches at Chestnut Hill College and Widener University. He is director of internet learning programmes for the Institute for Caregiver Education, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The 63-year-old Deputy, a former teacher, said it was time to 'hand on the baton' and said his election in 1982 and his success in six subsequent elections were the highlights of his career. Deputy McGinley's only regret was the fact that, on too many occasions, he found himself speaking in the Dáil about job losses in Donegal. McGinley will be sorely missed in Donegal politics as he is a gentleman with the peoples' interests at heart. Fine Gael South West Councillor Terence Slowey won the nomination to represent the Party at the next election. John Jordan (1930-1988) was a scholar-poet, short story writer and eminent literary critic, who re-founded the magazine Poetry Ireland in the early 1960s. He was the founding-editor of Poetry Ireland Review, the journal of the Poetry Ireland society. He was also a well-known broadcaster on such RTE programmes as Sunday Miscellany, the Thomas Davis Lectures and the TV book show Folio. Hugh McFadden is the Literary Executor of the Jordan Estate. Philadelphia Ceili Group The Philadelphia Ceili Group will present a concert of Traditional Irish Music and song featuring Donegal singer Deirdre Bonner, winner of the Joe Heaney award for traditional singing, accompanied by Morgan Campbell on banjo and vocals on Sunday June 25th 2006 at 8pm at The Commodore Barry Club (Irish Center), Carpenter Lane and Emlen St in West Mt Airy. Concert information at Philadelphia Ceili Group; email or call 215 248 0502. ![]() A to Z of the Best Irish Sites Arranmore Island Water in Danger Residents on Arranmore Island are concerned that their only fresh water supply could be destroyed due to illegal dumping on the Island. The illegal dump at Ballintra Mountain includes household rubbish, cars, furniture and dead animals and is adjacent to the lake which provides water to the islanders. A scheme was introduced to encourage people to dispose of their waste properly but a more responsible attitude needs to be developed on the Island and throughout Donegal.
